I’ve stopped all crime in Washington – that is, if you agree
that when a husband smacks his wife around, it’s not a felony.
As long as it’s a little fight, and takes place in a dwelling,
the need to get the cops involved should be less than compelling.
The District is a crime-free zone (almost) – but from what I’ve seen,
we really shouldn’t call a scuffle in the home a “crime scene.”
In cases where the wife forbids her husband to undress her,
and then he lashes out? The charge – if any – should be lesser.
De-emphasize the struggle when it’s pegged to domesticity,
that’s all I said – so why’d it launch this surfeit of publicity?
I issued forth an order hailing D.C.’s crime emergency;
called out domestic violence… but perhaps, now, there’s less urgency.
The tone I use with women is quite often thought insulting.
I double down when faced with any backlash that’s resulting.
So what if couples have a tiff, and women’s blood gets splattered?
My reputation is what most deserves to end up battered.
