When asked what caused the Civil War, my answer was a fudge.
Eventually: “Slavery, of course,” I did begrudge.
Slavery was the reason, that’s the easy part, I’ll grant.
(The questioner who asked me was a Democratic plant.)

We all know slavery caused the Civil War – that’s clearly true,
but also – ‘cause the North said what you could and couldn’t do?
It’s such a simple question, but my answer was evasive.
As an argument to vote for me… not so persuasive.

Don’t forget – DeSantis also stumbled over slavery.
Slaves learned useful skills, he said; that argument’s unsavory.
Slavery is wrong, all other comebacks should be spurned.
Seems for Ron and me there’s still much history to be learned.
